AskToad.com -- Home of your Toad Oracle KnowledgeBase
This is the discussion area about the start page. I think I like this idea! — Rich Jesse 2006/03/26 18:54
I think it's a great idea as well..as compared to emails scattered about. Having one central place to discuss AskToad design ideas seems like a Good Thing. — Mark Lerch 2006/04/12 15:15
I'm thinking that the most important item on the front page is to answer What is AskToad.com? or, more correctly, What can AskToad.com do for me?. And not only answer it, but concisely and quickly. A cluttered front page will turn away users instead of invite them. Also, the Wikipedia feel means that a larger number of visitors will already be familiar with the site's navigation, which I believe is one more hurdle eliminated for users to jump in and use it. Now the hard part – the verbage!

How about == "Home of your Toad Oracle KnowledgeBase" ==or something like that. I tried to italicize "your" to get the point across that the user can add or change content. Side note: I think each of the main pages should have a little blurb under the 'Discussion' tab explaining its purpose - such as you did for the "HOW-TOs" Discussion page. Going to one which does not have one (e.g., Troubleshooting) shows the default "This topic does not exist" which could be a touch confusing. — Mark Lerch 2006/04/17 18:34
Sounds good to me! The Site Message has been changed. I kept the "AskToad.com – " part of the message, since the site message is in the framework of the site and not part of the content (i.e. it will be consistent on every page, reminding visitors/users what that big ol' Toad in the upper left corner is for).— Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 05:14
As far as the "This topic does not exist" issue – that one will be tough since the discussion tab just redirects the user to another Wiki page. I would like the message to be a little more informational, though. A mention of exactly what is missing would be more appropo, IMHO. I'm a little hesitant on this one because modifications of this sort make upgrading the Wiki software difficult as custom mods like this would have to be manually ported to new versions, but I'm not closed to the idea. Thoughts? — Rich Jesse 2006/04/20 04:18
Agh!
I just added a new entry..clicked Preview, then clicked on another page. I was prompted "You'll lose changes, are you sure you want to leave?" to which I replied "No." It left anyway! — Mark Lerch 2006/04/18 13:02
Not good! I'll add that to the ToDo/Issues list. — Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 05:17
A possible idea from the beta users: a top Enhancements Requests page of some sort. — Mark Lerch 2006/04/18 13:02
YES! A wonderful idea, IMHO! Is this information available to be posted here? — Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 00:48 CDT
Good idea. It would be nice if we could have some kind of voting facility where users could vote for their favorite enhancements request. — Ed Klinger 2006/04/19 16:05
I should be able to implement a poll using a plugin. I'll try that tonite! — Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 11:54 CDT
I added some formatting here to group topics together for easy viewing (and hopefully maintaining!) And I added this comment without even loggin in! — Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 00:48 CDT
What is the difference between "Go" and "Search" under the Search box? Is the "Go" equivalent to the Google "I'm feeling lucky?"
— Mark Lerch 2006/04/19 12:50
"Go" and "Search" seem to produce the same results. Maybe the 2 buttons should be one button "Go Search". — Ed Klinger 2006/04/19 15:53
I'd think that "Go" would take you to the page with that exact title, where search would perform the usual search. From the (X)HTML, the two buttons serve distinct purposes. I'll have to check the PHP (or with the original skin author) to see what the diff is. — Rich Jesse 2006/04/19 11:54 CDT
I bumped up the size of the site message per feedback from Mathieu. Thoughts? — Rich Jesse 2006/04/20 04:15
Definitely agree.. was going to suggest it also. — Mark Lerch 2006/04/20 13:03
Woah! Traffic's dropped below the radargone through the roof.
Anyway, I've been attempting to upgrade the skin to address some minor Beta test concerns, but no luck. I think it's time to switch back to working on the front page and perhaps a EnhReq page (?) — Rich Jesse 2006/05/04 03:40
Is there a way to create an account on this wiki, so I can contribute more easily? I searched every page and could not find it anywhere. ~ Michael Richards (aka Nanobug)
Hey Nanobug, unfortunately accounts are not self-creating. One attempt to open things wide up proved to be more detrimental than helpful, as it appeared that all but one single person couldn't follow the big red flagged notes on the page.
Although I wouldn't have a problem of anyone posting their suggestions here for inclusion...

Just testing... — Rich Jesse 2006/12/16 21:38
For the record, someone decided to remove this page.

Wow. Some people have way too much time on their hands. Perhaps they'd be better off spending that time reading http://www.amazon.com/Cuckoos-Egg-Clifford-Stoll/dp/0671726889 — Rich Jesse 2007/05/12 04:03
Added the "What Links Here" link in the nav panel on the left, so the site can better navigated if a page was linked to externally. Also update the sorely out-of-date copyright notice! It's about time! (Hey, I've been busy!) — Rich Jesse 2007/08/20 01:41
