How To Install And Update FreeToad

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth on the Toad lists at Yahoo with reference to not being able to get the updated FreeToad working, Bert advised the following steps be carried out.

Initial, First Time Installation

  • Download the freeware installer.
  • Install the freeware using the freeware installer. The installer creates the base install and toad home dir and installs a number of files that are not contained in any of the upgrades. (See below).
  • Proceed to the Subsequent Upgrades step below to bring your installation up to the very latest edition of FreeToad.

Subsequent Upgrades

  • Clear out your browser's history and temp files in order to avoid downloading a cached version of the zip file
  • Download the freeware update (this is just a zip file containing changes to apply to the base install)
  • Unzip that file into the toad home dir which was created by the initial installation (above). Usually there are just a couple of new or updated files to replace existing ones. If you are prompted to overwrite existing files, choose Yes or Yes To All.
  • Run Toad as normal

Probable Error Causes

  • Download the freeware update
  • Unzip that file into some tem dir such as c:\temp
  • Try to run c:\temp\toad.exe

The problem here is that the upgrade is a zip file and only contains files that are new or have changed. The installer has lots more files that are required for a proper working installation of FreeToad.
